Santorini Survival Guide: How to Beat the Crowds
Santorini is beautiful, but it can be overwhelming. Learn the secret spots and timing to enjoy the island without the 2-hour photo lines.
Santorini is the victim of its own beauty. But you can still find the magic if you know where to look.
1. Avoid Oia at Sunset
The sunset in Oia is iconic, but it's a mosh pit of thousands of people. Instead, watch it from a boat, from the 'Pyrgos' hilltop, or from a private balcony in Imerovigli.
2. Stay in Imerovigli instead of Oia
It's higher up, quieter, has better views of the volcano (Caldera), and is halfway between the bustle of Fira and the crowds of Oia.
3. Visit the South
Most people never leave the North. The South has 'Red Beach', the prehistoric city of Akrotiri, and local wineries that are much more relaxed.
**Verdict:** Santorini is worth the hype, but only if you are willing to walk away from the crowds.
